Paul Mutch Cup

January 5,  2014

PINE HILLS LIGHTNING 6            WINDSOR ROYALS 3

Last Sunday night in the tenth year of the Paul Mutch Cup Pine Hills took back the trophy in an exciting game against Windsor Royals. The game right from the start was competitive and exciting into to the tenth inning after being tied 3-3 at the end of the regulation 9 innings

Pine Hills took the first run in the top of the third innings after a couple of Windsor errors helped advance Trent Baker to a scoring position with Josh Roebig batting him across the plate.Windsor were quick to follow with their first run in the bottom of the 4th tying the game up.

The game was kept quite tight with Jason Kilby for Pine Hills into the 5th innings and Justin Staatz into the 6th innings both pitching well. Ryan Thwaites did great job behind the dish calling the game and made a great out to first from the back net.

Top of 5th Pine Hills saw Josh Roebig come home across the plate from a hit to 9 from Jay Nilsson putting them in front, but not for long!Windsor then advanced in the bottom of the fifth to 3 after bringing two runs in with a sac fly from Andy Buckley and a HPB.

Pine Hills not prepared to lie down drove in another run off the hit to 8 from Brent Thompson in the top of the 7th when we then saw the game tied up again at 3 apiece.

With a little bit of a ruckus at top of 7 with that scoring run by Jay Nilsson, things settled immediately back into a good game which was a credit to both teams.

Both teams then remained scoreless with some good pitching from Craig Goodman and Jordan Latham (WR) until Pine Hills broke the drought in the extra innings (10th) with some good batting started by Michael Formosa followed by Harry Baker, Josh Roebig and Trent Baker bringing in three runs to put Pine Hills in the lead and getting the win after Windsor were unable to score in the bottom of the tenth with Craig Goodman closing out the game.

Hits for WR were Brent Young, Jamie Knight, doubles by Matt Roxburgh & Logan Wade

Hits for Pine Hills were Trent Baker x2, Josh Roebig x 3, Mitch Paewai x 2, Mitch Nilsson, Jay Nilsson, Brent Thompson, Michael Formosa, Luke Thwaites and Harry Baker.

The John Macan Trophy MVP was awarded by Bruce Mutch to Josh Roebig for his excellent batting and base running.

The Paul Mutch Cup has been shared 5 games each between the two clubs who play this match each year in memory of Paul Mutch a past player of both Pine Hills and Windsor and John Maccan a past Volunteer from Windsor.

We hope the Pine Hills renewed spirit carries them to more games like this one into the rest of the season.

Hi Managers,

Could you please forward the following information to your teams?
We only have one precious full sized diamond for all members of our club to use for training. There are also many requests for use of our field from other organisations, such as BQ coaching & umpiring clinics, Rams & Metro rep teams, touring invitational teams, and even the Bandits. At the start of the season, teams were allocated training times to help fit everyone in. We then manage other requests for field usage based on these training times.

Any requests for changes to training times, or for additional sessions, even if only one off or short term, must be sent to Shannon Woodrow, so she can check there are no clashes with other training sessions or activities that have already been booked and confirmed. This also applies to any private coaching sessions organised with senior or import players. Whilst we have no issue with players working hard to improve their skills, we must show courtesy to our members who have already got use of the fields, and not inconvenience or impinge on their booked time.

Of course it goes without saying that anyone who uses the field & bullpens also has a responsibility to repair & tidy them after use - deco must be screeded, the footholes filled in on the mounds (infield & bullpens), and in the batters box, and the mound & plate area must be covered with the available tarps and weighted down so they don't blow off. This is most important during the summer storm season, to reduce the risk of unplayable fields & unnecessary washouts on game days.
Thanks for your co-operation & courtesy in following this procedure.
